Small Organized Spaces: Kitchen Utensil Drawer Organization
Howdy friends! I’m back to share another Small Organized Spaces post with you. This time I’m sharing all about my kitchen utensil drawer organization. As like all my organizing projects, this one was ignited by the fact that it was annoying me big time. And that’s essentially how I keep my home organized. One small annoying problem at a time. No big over hauls or grand gestures here. Nope just little projects that over time add up to one lovely organized peaceful home. This project took me about 20 minutes and I spent very little dollars to do it.

Now before I show you the before, I’m already anticipating the comments that “it doesn’t look so bad” or “I wish my drawer looked like the before”. I get that. But what you need to keep in mind is that this particular drawer has seen many a makeover in the past 10 years that we’ve lived in this house. And I totally would have left it alone expect for a few annoying problems that were bugging me.
Here is the before shot and then I’ll tell you about the problems.
Make a Plan:
Problems that need to be fixed:
- we have pizza cutters that do not fit properly in the basket holding them. I’m afraid one of these days I’m going to slice my hand right open. Annoying and not safe!
- the two white drawers on the right hand side are a smidge too tall for the drawer and often will catch on the top of the drawer when you try and open it. So annoying!
- and finally, I just didn’t love how the large knives on the left hand side all got thrown on top of one another. It feels like another safety hazard especially when you need the one from the bottom of the pile.
Remove:
So I’ve identified the problems. Next up was emptying the drawer of everything. I piled it all up on the counter. Don’t fight me on this one, it’s important! No shuffling things around to get to the finish line. Scratch that, you can shuffle if that’s what floats your boat but it just may not be quite as effective :). But say you did decide to do what “that crazy organizing junkie” suggests, you might find yourself with one big mess. It’s okay, it’s all part of my PROCESS. Don’t panic!
Bella just wants me to hurry up and get back to cuddling. She has no interest in this thing called organization. She’s a weirdo dog. Thank goodness she is cute!
I already had a drawer liner in this drawer that I had originally purchased from Dollarama very inexpensively. It works for me so I didn’t feel the need to change it. However it did move around some so I added a little bit of this Museum Putty to the back of all four corners to keep it in place. This is the one I purchased HERE. It did the trick.
Purge:
Next I did a quick purge of all the things we hadn’t used in the past year. It wasn’t a huge purge pile but it did give me a little extra space to work with. Whatever the size of your purge pile, celebrate it because you are making an effort to only keep in your home what you love, use and have the room to store. That’s exciting!
Containerize:
Now if you’ve made it this far, it’s time for the most exciting part! It’s container time, woohoo!
Down to the basement I went and grabbed some different containers to use. For those of you that might be new here, I have a little “containers in waiting” storage space in my house for such a time as this. Have I ever shown this space on the blog? I don’t think I have! I’m too scared you all might judge me. But then again, you were all very kind about my pouch obsession, so maybe one day I’ll get up the nerve to show you my container hotel, ha!
So I grabbed some new containers and just start placing them and re-placing them. Around and around I go. These white containers are not as tall as the last ones which means they won’t get caught on the drawer. Yay! These bins are just from the dollar store.
I also had these Snapware bins from the dollar store on hand and I really thought they’d be great for this space. However you’ll notice in the end picture that they didn’t get their shot at stardom yet. Don’t be too sad for them though, their hotel is quite nice ?
Next up I purchased this in-drawer knife mat to solve my knife dilemma and it’s perfect for the job! There is also a bigger size if you have more knives than this.
So here’s what it looks like now.
I decided to use some clear acrylic containers (also from the dollar store) that fit the space a little better. I like everything to be snug as a bug in a rug without actually having to spend a whole lot of money to do it. Do you know what I’m saying?
I also did my containers in a container trick to keep the most frequently used items separate and special. Outside of that I don’t really micro-organize the stuff in the bins. My family would never be able to keep it up!
I also used more of that Museum Putty under the white bins to be sure they don’t budge.
I am very happy with how my utensil drawer organization project turned out. And while you might think it wasn’t worth my time just to solve some minor annoying problems, I can assure you it is. What you have to keep in mind is that if you are struggling with small annoying problems in every space of your home, these all add up to a lot of frustration and stress. That’s not good. So be aware of what annoys you and do what you can to solve them within the constraints of your time and budget of course. A 15-20 minute task each day will lead to some pretty significant changes after awhile. Wouldn’t that be nice?
