Three Tips to Easily Customize Your Closet to Maximize Space
The following is a guest post with three tips to easily customize your closet to maximize space, from regular contributor, Morgan from Morganize with Me.
Four years ago, when we moved into our house, I was beyond excited to live in a brand new home. The beauty of a new build is that everything is fresh and typically designed more for our modern ways of living. The great room floor plan and large kitchen island were dreams come true!
However, the challenges of a new home (or any non-custom-built home) is that they often come with builder grade features. And in closet and storage areas, this typically looks like basic design without much customization. Features tend to be cookie cutter which makes it more challenging to organize these spaces well. But we all need our storage spaces to work for how we actually live, so I’m going to share how to easily customize your closet and storage areas to help maximize both space and functionality. Please consider me your “Closet Coach!”
Three Tips to Customize Your Closet
Tip #1: Team Hangers!
We’re going to start with the easiest and simplest way to upgrade any hanging area in a closet. Start by donating or recycling those dry cleaner hangers and mismatched combination of hangers. Instead, commit to only using matching hangers. They can be any style that works for what you are hanging, but do make sure that they are the same color, look, and style. This step will automatically add an aesthetic feeling of cohesion. It’s a quick fix that instantly transforms any closet. (Also, be sure to purchase a few extra hangers so when you add to your closet you can continue to maintain the streamlined style.)
Note from Laura: I highly recommend using these thin style type hangers (affiliate link) as you can literally double your hanging space!
Tip #2: Bins for the Win!
Adding bins (or baskets) helps to keep like items together and makes it easier to locate things. To capitalize on shelf space, begin by measuring the length, width, and depth, and then add the size and style of bins that will fill up the most amount of real estate as possible. Think both horizontally and vertically, and use complimentary products. Doing so will give the space a uniformed look and uniformity makes any space look more finished. Lastly, consider adding labels, this will assist with being able to maintain the space.
Tip #3: V for Vertical (or Victory)!
In many closet and storage areas there is often a plethora of unused high vertical space. And, while this is not always the most functional storage space (due to accessibility), it can still be useable. Especially for items you don’t tend to reach for as frequently or are more seasonal by nature. To take advantage of these higher spaces, look for ways to stack and store. Adding coordinating stacking storage options or taller bins, will capitalize on the additional space. Likewise, there may be vertical space on the back of a door, behind a door, or on a wall you could use too. Don’t underestimate the idea of adding systems wherever you have the option to do so.
With some creative customization you can make the most of any standard closet storage area. Are you with me team? With a little intention and some strategy, you can create both practical and pretty storage spaces.
